Placenta se odděluje od stěny dělohy a prochází porodním kanálem ven z pochvy. Velké cévy, které vedou do placenty a zase z ní vycházejí se během okamžiku uzavřou. Vlákna v děloze jsou k tomu přizpůsobena. Tím nedochází k dalšímu převodu krve z placenty ven a je tak zabezpečeno, že nekrvácíte.
Vypuzování placenty trvá průměrně 10 až 20 minut. Když má dojít k vypuzení placenty, můžete pocítit obnovení kontrakcí v děloze. Nebojte se, máte již po porodu. Těchto pár nových kontrakcí zaručí odloučení placenty od děložní stěny. Personál vás nejspíše bude motivovat, abyste ještě jednou a naposledy zatlačila a placenta bude na světě.
Hned po porodu placenty ji zdravotnický personál musí dostatečně prohlédnout, jestli je celá a jak vypadá. Je velmi důležité, aby žádná, ani malinká část nezůstala v děloze. Došlo by totiž k zánětu dělohy nebo silnému krvácení. Placenta bývá kruhovitého tvaru a vychází z ní pupečník. Z jedné strany má placenta namodralé blány, z druhé je červená tkáň. Mívá asi kolem 20 centimetrů v průměru a pupečník celý je asi 60 centimetrů dlouhý. Samozřejmě, že se vyskytují výjimky ve tvaru i velikosti.
